Dr Andreas Papatheodorou was born in Athens, Greece in 1974. He attended the Lycée Léonin, one of the oldest schools in Greece established in 1838; he graduated in June 1991 by receiving the highest possible grade achievable in the Greek Secondary Education system (20/20).
Following his successful participation in the Panhellenic Examinations, Andreas was admitted ranking first to the newly established Department of International and European Economic Studies at the Athens University of Economics and Business in October 1991. He was admitted to the degree of Ptychion (equivalent to the Bachelor of Arts) in September 1995 with specialisation in International Economics, having achieved the highest average mark in the Department (9.44/10).
Andreas commenced his postgraduate studies in October 1995, reading for a two-year, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Economics at St Antony's College, University of Oxford. He completed successfully his degree in June 1997 gaining specialisation in International Economics and Industrial Organisation. During the second year of the MPhil programme, he became actively engaged and inspired by tourism research in the context of his Thesis. On these grounds, Andreas decided to pursue further studies and joined the School of Geography, University of Oxford in October 1997, reading for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil). He successfully completed his Doctorate in July 2000 and was formally admitted to the degree in May 2001.
In June 2000, Dr Papatheodorou was appointed as a Lecturer in Tourism in the School of Management Studies for the Service Sector (later merged with the Surrey European Management School to form the new School of Management) at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. In accordance with his job's description, he lectured in both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes of the School, engaged in research and performed a number of managerial duties. In November 2004, Andreas was elected as Assistant Professor in Industrial Economics with emphasis on Tourism (the equivalent of a Senior Lecturer) in the Department of Business Administration at the University of the Aegean, Greece. The School has an excellent reputation in Greece regarding tourism studies and a rising profile world-wide. Despite this decision to relocate back to his home country, Andreas is actively pursuing the development of his international career through academic associations (visiting appointments, lecturing and research) and consulting collaborations at a global level.
Dr Andreas Papatheodorou speaks four languages (Greek, English, French and German). He has an established interest in elected offices; in addition to various positions held during the school years, he was a Member of the Board of the Alumni of Lycée Léonin in 1992 and was President of the Oxford University Greek Society in 1997-98. In 1994 he graduated with Excellence from the National Conservatory of Athens and was a professional classical guitarist for a short term; he is still organising music soirées for charity on an occasional basis. He is an active squash player but also enjoys swimming and sailing in his leisure time!
